Aim

Instruct individuals at the improver to intermediate surfing level. 

Locations / Remit

Instruct in surf / green waves up to 3ft (1 metre).

Entry Requirements

Before starting this course, you will have:
  • at least 750 hours surfing experience at various surf breaks. 
  • have surfing skill and knowledge equivalent to ASI Surf Wise Level 7 Advanced Surfer.  Able to perform - top turn, bottom turn, re-entry, cutback and roundhouse cutback in 4ft to 6ft surf.
  • minimum of 12 months surfing instruction experience. (requirement may be waived if you have advanced to elite advanced surfing ability)
Pre-requisite Courses
  • hold ASI Level 1 Surfing Instructor certificate. 
    (non ASI Level 1 Certificates may be accepted based on experience and surfing ability. Additional course work may be required)

Course Requirements

At Workshop:
  • Complete theory and exercises, practice to complete your written project.
  • Demonstrate ASI Surf Wise Level 7 Intermediate surfing ability. Able to perform top turn, bottom turn, re-entry, cutback and roundhouse cutback in 4ft to 6ft surf.

After Workshop:
  • Submit 1 written project.  Prepare a coaching plan for an improver-intermediate student. 
  • Complete 15 practical hours experience (5 hours signed off in workshop).

Other:
  • Submit a current ASI Surf Rescue certificate or other surf rescue certificate. Refer to: Acceptable Rescue certificates
  • Submit a current senior first aid certificate. Refer to: Acceptable First Aid certificates
  • Submit identification (if not previously submitted)

Note: Surf Rescue and First Aid Certificates can be provided before or after workshop or within 12 months of enrolment. 

Time to Complete: You have 12 months from date of workshop to complete all course requirements.

Equipment

The following equipment and clothing is required to complete the training:
  • Surf clothing
  • Fibreglass surfboard to demonstrate your own ASI Surf Wise Level 7 advanced surfing skills.

For your written project:
  • A student at the improver level.  
  • Beginner soft-top boards with soft fins and leash and/or fibreglass board.  
  • Video camera or mobile phone

In addition: 
  • Computer or device to access ASI e-learning platform  
  • Video camera or mobile phone for own surfing video (as applicable)

ASI’s E-learning Platform Provides access to training manuals, videos, reference materials and assessments, includes built-in language translation.

Certificate Issued

FAQs

(1) Can I enrol in multiple Surfing Instructor courses simultaneously?
Is it possible to enrol in Level 1, followed by Level 2 and Level 3, at the same time?
No, you are required to complete 12 months as an ASI instructor before progressing to Level 2, and another 12 months of instructing experience to qualify for Level 3.
Exemption: You may enrol in courses concurrently if you have already met the minimum instructing period for each level and possess advanced surfing skills.

(2) Can I bypass the ASI Level 1 Instructor course and proceed directly to the Level 2 course?
No, you must complete the ASI Level 1 Surfing Instructor course first.
It serves as a prerequisite for the Level 2 course and includes essential information required for advancing to Level 2.

(3) I hold a non-ASI Surfing Instructor certificate, can I get recognition or transfer to ASI Level 2 Surfing instructor.
No. Transfers are not available for Level 2 Surfing Instructor. There are some exceptions, so please contact ASI for more information.
